Charles (Charlie) Webster's 38-year career began in 1947 as an engineer. He worked his way to Vice President of Engineering with CNCP in 1979 and retired in 1985. Charlie was thought of as the pioneer who set up cross country communications, radio, fiber optic links and broadband switched networks.

In the 1960s, Charlie was responsible for providing network access to CBC broadcast programs across the nation. With his engineering acumen and leadership, a broadband audio network was set up. This network established the foundation upon which modern day broadcast networks are built today.

Charlie led his team through an innovative phase of the Company. He was one of the first to recognize the feasibility of fiber optics for telecommunications and networking for CNCP. A fiber optic communication system allowed transmissions over longer distances and at higher data rates over other forms of communication. In the early days of fiber optics, Charlie was instrumental in setting up systems between Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver.

Charlie continued to set up and redesign facilities across the country for customers such as the Department of National Defense.

Charlie was also entrusted with the merger of two organizations - Canadian National Telecommunications and Canadian Pacific Telecommunications. Charles was able to earn the respect of all the participants and this contributed to the success of a new CNCP organization with renewed strength.

In addition to his remarkable technical prowess and busy schedule, Charlie always took the time to dialogue with his staff.
